Why Worry Feels Like Control (But Keeps You Stuck in Anxiety)
Let’s be honest.
Most of us don’t think of worry as a problem…
We think of it as responsibility.
It sounds like this under the surface:
“If I don’t think about it, something bad will happen.”
“If I let my guard down, I’ll miss something important.”
“If I stop worrying, I’ll regret it.”
And if you’ve ever thought something like this—you’re not broken.
Does this sound familiar? You’re human.
But here’s the truth we don’t talk about enough and this has changed my life!
Worry is not protection.
It’s rehearsal.
:) What?
Your Brain Thinks It’s Helping
Your brain is wired to keep you safe.
So when something feels uncertain, it tries to solve it by running scenarios… over and over again.
“What if this happens?”
“What if that goes wrong?”
“What if I’m not prepared?”
It feels productive. It feels like you're staying ahead. It PRETENDS to be necessary!
But what’s actually happening?
You’re mentally living through pain that hasn’t even happened. Let me repeat that…. You are mentally living through pain that hasn’t even happened!
And your nervous system doesn’t know the difference.
Why Worry Feels So Exhausting
Your body responds to imagined threats the same way it does to real ones.
So every “what if” activates stress.
Your shoulders tighten.
Your chest constricts.
Your thoughts speed up.
And now your body is living in a constant state of readiness or activation.
This is what I call double suffering.
You suffer once in your mind…
And then again if the situation actually happens.
And most of the time?
It never even does.
Worry Doesn’t Create Safety
This is the part that can feel uncomfortable.
Because somewhere along the way, we started believing:
“If I think about it enough, I can control it.”
But worry doesn’t prevent outcomes. It just keeps your body braced for impact.
And over time, that constant state of tension becomes your baseline.
You start living from protection… instead of presence. Can you relate?
What Actually Creates Safety
Safety doesn’t come from thinking more.
It comes from regulation.
From teaching your body:
“I am safe right now.”
Because when your body feels safe, your mind can think clearly.
This is where faith and neuroscience meet in the most beautiful way.
Scripture tells us:
“Do not worry about tomorrow…” (Matthew 6:34)
Not because life is predictable.
But because God never asked you to carry tomorrow.
Worry is often our attempt to take control of what was never ours to hold.
A Simple Practice: Worry Time
This is one of the most practical tools I give my clients.
Instead of letting worry run your entire day, you create a container for it.
You tell your brain:
“Not now. I will come back to this later.”
And you actually keep that agreement.
What happens over time is powerful.
Your brain begins to trust you. It stops interrupting you constantly.
You’re not ignoring your concerns; you’re leading them.
And that containment is what allows your nervous system to finally exhale.
The Deeper Invitation
Healing isn’t about eliminating thoughts.
It’s about changing your relationship to them.
It’s about noticing when you’ve slipped into fear…
and gently coming back to truth.
To presence.
To safety.
To God.
Because real peace?
It doesn’t come from having everything figured out.
It comes from knowing you don’t have to. 🙂
